چکیده

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) is an earth-viewing sensor being developed as a facility instrument for the Earth Observing System (EOS) to be launched in the late 1990’s. MODIS consists of two separate instruments that scan a swath width sufficient to provide nearly complete global coverage every 2 days from a polar-orbiting, sun-synchronous, platform at an altitude of 705 km. MODIS-N (nadir) will provide images in 36 spectral bands between 0.415 and 14.235 urn with spatial resolutions of 250 m (2 bands), 500 m (5 bands), and 1000 m (29 bands). These bands have been carefully selected to enable advanced studies of land, ocean, and atmospheric processes. In this paper we describe the status of MODIS-N and its companion instrument MODIS-T (tilt), a tiltable cross-track scanning spectrometer with 32 uniformly spaced channels between 0.410 and 0.875 pm. In addition, we review the various methods being developed for the remote sensing of atmospheric properties using MODIS, placing primary emphasis on the principal atmospheric applications of determining the optical, microphysical, and physical properties of clouds and aerosol particles from spectral reflection and thermal emission measurements. In addition to cloud and aerosol properties, MODIS-N will be used for determining the total precipitable water vapor and atmospheric stability. The physical principles behind the determination of each of these atmospheric products will be described herein, together with an example of their application to aircraft and/or satellite measurements. Extensions of these and related methods to MODIS observations pose an extraordinary challenge as well as a unique opportunity to enhance our understanding of the earth-atmosphere-ocean system.

Cloud and aerosol properties, precipitable water, and profiles of temperature and water vapor from MODIS

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is an earth-viewing sensor that flies on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites, launched in 1999 and 2002, respectively. MODIS scans a swath width of 2330 km that is sufficiently wide to provide nearly complete global coverage every two days from a polar-orbiting, sun-synchronous, platform at an altitude of 705 km. Satellite remote sensing of dust aerosol indirect effects on ice cloud formation.

We undertook a new approach to investigate the aerosol indirect effect of the first kind on ice cloud formation by using available data products from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and obtained physical understanding about the interaction between aerosols and ice clouds. Our analysis focused on the examination of the variability in the correlation between ice cloud paramet...

Semi - annual report on activities associated with the MODIS task : Global Monitoring of Aerosol Properties , Water Vapor , Cloud Structure

The overall objective of this investigation is to develop algorithms, based on the unique properties of the MODIS sensor, for remote sensing of aerosol and cloud characteristics, and remote sensing of water vapor. The derived aerosol, cloud and water vapor properties will be used to develop aerosol climatology, to perform atmospheric corrections of the MODIS imagery in the solar region, as well...

Remote sensing of cirrus cloud vertical size profile using MODIS data

[1] This paper describes an algorithm for inferring cirrus cloud top and cloud base effective particle sizes and cloud optical thickness from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 0.645, 1.64 and 2.13, and 3.75 mm band reflectances/ radiances. This approach uses a successive minimization method based on a look-up library of precomputed reflectances/radiances from an adding-d...

General Macro- and Microphysical Properties of Deep Convective Clouds as Observed by MODIS

Deep convective clouds (DCCs) are an important player in the climate system. In this paper the authors use remote sensing data mainly from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud product to investigate a few general cloud macroand microphysical properties of DCCs. This investigation concentrates on the tallest convective clouds and associated thick anvils that are labele...
